Mining Industry News for 2025

1. ALROSA is starting to develop Russia's first natural CO₂ absorption project in kimberlites
ALROSA announced the development of a pilot climate project that will utilize the natural ability of kimberlite rocks to capture and retain carbon dioxide. The company has been studying this process for several years in collaboration with scientific institutes, and the results allow us to estimate natural CO₂ sequestration at over 1 million tons of CO₂-eq per year. In 2025, ALROSA became the first mining company to confirm the carbon neutrality of its operations through natural CO₂ absorption, and plans to launch the pilot project and validate the methodology in 2026.
2. Russia has tested the first domestic SLAM drone for mine workings.
Nornickel has completed testing of the Russian-made InnoSpector SLAM drone, designed for inspecting hard-to-reach underground mine sections without GPS. Developed by the Innopolis University Center for Unmanned Aerial Systems, the drone creates highly accurate 3D maps of mine workings and navigates using cameras and lidars. The device simplifies mine surveying and improves safety, and its operation requires no special training.
3. A Chinese investor will build a "coal cableway" between the Amur Region and China.
The Amur Region plans to build an innovative, environmentally friendly coal transportation system—a "cableway express"—connecting the region with China. The project is being implemented by the Chinese corporation Xuan Yuan with the participation of the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (FEACDC). The system, using composite cables, will run on renewable energy and reduce dust and carbon emissions, optimizing supplies between Russia and China.
4. Elga plans to build the 1 GW Kankun hydroelectric power station in Yakutia.
Elga, a major coal mining company, announced plans to invest in the construction of the Kankun Hydroelectric Power Station on the Timpton River in Yakutia, with a capacity of up to 1 GW. This move is intended to meet the energy needs of the region's industry, alleviate energy shortages, and support mining development. The project, included in the General Plan for Electric Power Development through 2042, could be commissioned by 2036–2039.
5. Okhotsk Mining and Processing Company received Polymetal's assets with licenses for three gold fields.
Okhotsk Mining and Geological Company (OMGK) has acquired the New Okhotsk Ore Company, including licenses for three gold fields in Khabarovsk Krai. The Vetvisty, Purkikit, and Vysoky licenses provide access to significant gold reserves, and the permits are valid until 2026–2043. The deal follows the restructuring of Polymetal's assets and strengthens OMGK's position in the region.
6. Russia has developed a new GOST standard for drilling rigs.
Russia has developed a new state standard (GOST) for drilling rigs, aimed at updating equipment requirements and improving the efficiency of drilling operations. The document clarifies the technical parameters, safety, and operational criteria for drilling rigs, which should support the development of mining and geological operations and improve domestic quality standards.
7. Russia has become the leader in aluminum supplies to South Korea.
Russia has established itself as the leading supplier of aluminum to South Korea, strengthening its position in the international metals market. Export growth reflects demand from the Korean industry and strengthening trade ties between the two countries, contributing to increased production and foreign trade turnover for Russian aluminum.
