Mining equipment spare parts and components – what has changed in the market over the past couple of years?

Mining World

The Russian mining equipment and components market continues to adapt to new supply chain conditions, sanctions, and changing logistics. Key trends include finding a balance between parallel imports, import substitution, and cooperation with manufacturers from "friendly countries."

Parallel import

According to Dmitry Zikiryaev, Commercial Director of JSC Mining Machines, equipment, spare parts, and consumables continue to be supplied to Russia via parallel imports. Despite the development of domestic production, Russian companies are still unable to fully meet the demand for components and drilling tools. This complicates logistics and increases costs, leading to higher prices, he noted in an interview with Moskovskaya Gazeta.

However, not all market participants see the need for parallel imports. Alexander Verkin, Head of Engineering at Sever Minerals JSC, emphasizes that his company independently assembles equipment for crushing, screening, and mining and processing plants and uses similar components from Turkey, China, South Africa, and other countries. He states that the quality of products from "friendly" manufacturers is comparable to Western counterparts, and competent engineering allows customers to receive a complete technological solution.

Logistics and rising prices

Alexey Bogachev, Commercial Director of Kolyma Minerals LLC, noted that the cessation of direct shipments from Europe and the US has forced companies to reorient themselves toward Central Asia and China. Furthermore, the increased number of intermediaries makes deliveries longer and more expensive. Delivery times have increased exponentially: while shipments from Germany used to arrive in 10 days, now they've increased significantly. Many companies are switching to Chinese equipment, the quality of which remains inconsistent, the expert added.

Import substitution

Along with parallel imports, Russia is also emphasizing localization. For example, a plant for the production of mechanical engineering components for crushing equipment, mining, and special-purpose machinery will be built in the Kaluga Region, RIA Novosti reports. Investment in the project will amount to almost 50 billion rubles.

Alexey Zubekhin, Director of the Ore Preparation Department at Mining Element, notes that, despite some successful examples, the production of complex high-tech components in Russia remains uncompetitive compared to products from friendly countries. The cost of such products is higher, requiring additional government support.

Market trends

The years 2022–2023 saw a surge in demand for spare parts, as customers feared disruptions in the supply of Western components. However, by 2024, the market had stabilized: most of the parts were successfully replaced with Chinese and Turkish equivalents, according to Excavator.ru.

Among the key trends:

// an increase in the number of suppliers in tenders (from 2–3 to more than 20),
// reducing differences between suppliers due to the dominance of Chinese manufacturers,
// opening of offices by Russian customer companies in Turkey, China and the UAE to reduce costs,
// transfer of repairs and maintenance to third-party service contractors,
// restoration and return to service of mothballed Western vehicles amid a shortage of high-quality spare parts.

At the same time, there remains a shortage of certain high-tech components, such as Scandinavian hydraulic drills and screw compressors, which cannot yet be replaced by Asian equivalents. These items continue to be imported through parallel imports, Mining Element added.
