Complex Raw Materials Economics: Russia is Reviving Hydroxamate Production

Flotent Chemicals Rus, a Russian chemical reagent manufacturer, is beginning production of hydroxamates. This class of chemical compounds was produced in Russia in the 1970s, after which it virtually disappeared from industrial use.
The development and testing of a line of reagents took two years. Hydroxamates are designed for the extraction of a wide range of metals, including copper, tin, and rare earth elements (REEs). Furthermore, the revival of this class of chemical compounds solves one of the key challenges for large mining companies: processing significant volumes of oxidized mass accumulated at deposits. Until now, there was no cost-effective method for processing such raw materials: existing technologies were too expensive and complex.
The key property of this type of reagent is chelation. Hydroxamates form strong complexes by forming two coordination bonds with a single metal ion and closing the five-membered ring. These complexes are more difficult to break than the single bond formed by traditional collectors. Due to their properties, hydroxamates provide high selectivity and recovery where standard reagents are ineffective.
In addition to their technological effectiveness, hydroxamates are environmentally friendly: they are more biodegradable than most traditional flotation reagents, as their structure does not contain toxic elements. The reagents are compatible with the main types of foaming agents and environmental regulators, and their use requires standard safety precautions.
The effectiveness of this development has been confirmed in industrial trials. In some cases, using the reagent on mixed ores allows for a 15–20% increase in recovery compared to similar reagents and other types of reagents.
"We've developed various solutions tailored to the technological needs of various industries. Currently, our hydroxamates line includes 20 grades, adapted for various types of plants and ores, including the beneficiation of iron-containing raw materials. The revival of this class of chemical compounds represents an investment in increasing the profitability and technological development of domestic enterprises. Our team not only helps select the right grade but also provides comprehensive technological support for implementation: from staff training to establishing production processes," notes Alexey Marfitsin, CEO of Flotent Chemicals Rus.
